If some of you have been wondering what all the fuss has been about lately, it’s that CATS. now has a Development Team.. .and guess what! You’re on it! C.A.T.S. is in the process of purchasing another building at 8411 Broadway, just north of our main facility. The purpose of this building is to bring our programs together into a centralized location. The new facility will house both our Women’s Residential Treatment Program and our Outpatient Programs. In addition, we plan on expanding our services into adolescent treatment. This is some exciting stuff! As a way of communicating with stakeholders and the community, we are embarking on several smaller fund raising activities. These activities are meant to give CATS. recognition, while raising money for ancillary programs for our clients, such as art I music therapy, spirituality, and special events. All of this is crucial to CATS. current program success and that of the expansion. So when we say ‘You’re on the team,” we mean you are a part of something really big and we hope that you continue to support CATS. efforts! Remember, it’s our mission to serve and this is a great way to do it!
Today's Situation
As Cuyahoga county and the neighborhoods of Cleveland struggle to assist those returning to the community from incarceration, a barrier exists. 80% of the crimes committed are done under the influence or involve alcohol and drugs. Without treatment, those suffering from chemical dependency will continue to face unemployment or underemployment and become involved in more criminal activity. chemically dependent and returning offenders must have their basic needs met in order to become successful, productive citizens.
The female offender population in particular is increasing. Family units are disrupted due to alcohol/drug use, criminal activity, and abandonment. the women we serve are often doing all they can to survive. Once incarcerated, few, if any, actually receive the necessary treatment to assist them in overcoming their addictions. Often, it is not until they are released into a supportive treatment environment, like Community Assessment and Treatment Services, Inc. (C.A.T.S.) that they are given the resources they need to heal.
C.A.T.S. provides women more than education on their addictions; it offers an array of treatment services that prepare women to end dysfunctional lifestyles and reestablish families and positive relationships. The program is structured to strengthen their physical and mental well-being, education, workforce readiness skills and life skills.
Today, C.A.T.S. leases both the current Women's Treatment Center at Holy Name Convent and an outpatient facility. Building the new facility will allow for better efficiency, reduced expenses, and most importantly, better services for this particularly vulnerable segment of society.
C.A.T.S. Partners with A Partnership for a Safer Cleveland
Community Assessment & Treatment Services hosted a Partnership for a Safer Cleveland’s truancy and curfew program in May and August of 2005. PSC utilized our facility for a central location, bringing youth in off the street who were in violation of either curfew or truancy laws. Once inside, their parents are contacted and are given the option of paying a fine or having their children participate in community service. Youth must complete 6 hours, while parents are required to attend a 2 hour resource course in order to be in compliance. Otherwise, they will be seen in court to pay their fines.
In addition to allowing PSC to use our facility, we offer community service through a group run by Derrick Evans, which includes clients and incorporates discussions about thinking and behavior. This is just a sample of what C.A.T.S. does to assist in making the neighborhood a safer place to live, to work, and to go to school. For more information about this program, please see Natalie or Derrick.
